Artist Statement
This was my first year as a ceramics student, and I loved throwing on the wheel. I really wanted to throw bowls for the show. For my art show, I focused on a simple design, but had interesting glazes that made the bowls pop. The bowls were thrown on the wheel, and were medium shaped, with smooth texture to them. To create the marble effect, I dropped underglaze onto piles of shaving cream, then used a needle tool to swirl the color around. After that, I rolled the bisque fired bowls in the shaving cream mixture, then rinsed off the shaving cream in the sink. The end result was a really cool abstract effect which provided movement to the bowls, and I sealed the underglaze with a clear glaze. I chose the colors purple, black, and blue in order to create a calm, but bright overall collection. These colors had a strong contrast against the white bowls, and the stripes and colored centers brought a sort of unity to the collection. I liked this class and am hoping to be able to be back on the wheel sometime soon.
